McInnis Alternative Fuels Project

Replacing a portion of coal and petroleum coke with energy recovered from non-recyclable byproducts is one of the most direct ways to reduce carbon intensity in cement production, and it is what the McInnis plant is actively pursuing.

At the McInnis plant, co-processing replaces a share o traditional fossil fuels with energy recovered from non-hazardous, non-recyclable byproducts: materials such as plastics, paper, cardboard, and non-tire rubber that cannot be recycled and would otherwise go to landfill. Co-processing is a regulated practice that captures both the energy and mineral content of those materials in the kiln, reducing reliance on coal and petroleum coke and diverting waste from disposal.

 

The McInnis plant has also fully transitioned its product range to Portland Limestone Cement (PLC), which uses a higher proportion of limestone in place of clinker, the most carbon-intensive stage of cement production. Taken together, the fuel substitution program and the PLC transition reflect Learn and Evolve in practice: building on what the plant already does well, measuring progress against documented standards, and continuing to improve.
