Safety is one of the core values of Our VC Way, and it is stated without qualification: people’s safety comes first, before results. This principle is non-negotiable, and it guides how we operate inside our plants and terminals as well as how we conduct ourselves beyond them.
Our commitment to safety in the cement industry extends to every person involved in our operations, not only our employees, but contractors, customers, and all stakeholders who interact with our sites. Votorantim Cimentos conducts its business with the explicit policy of safeguarding the Safety and Health of all of them. At the global level, Votorantim Cimentos has set a 2030 target of zero fatalities across its operations worldwide, alongside a global lost-time injury rate for direct and contracted employees below 0.40. These are measurable commitments that every business unit in the network, including St Marys Cement, is accountable to.
We are in the business of building more than structures. We are here to build stronger communities, and that work looks different depending on what each community needs most.
Sometimes it means rolling up our sleeves. When our team partners with Habitat for Humanity Canada on build days in Northumberland, Ontario, we bring more than skills to the site; we bring energy, teamwork, and a shared commitment to helping families access safe and affordable housing. At Bowmanville Ribfest, that same spirit shows up differently: our employees volunteer as event greeters, support hospitality, and help keep the grounds running for the crowds who attend each year. On the shelves of the Stratford House of Blessing Food Bank, our volunteers show up the same way too, as neighbours who understand that the community around our plant is not a backdrop to our work but an extension of it.
Our sponsorships carry that same spirit. As a proud division sponsor of the Josh Bailey Classic Tournament, we cheer on the Clarington Toros as they take to the ice each season. We have joined the United Way Day of Caring, climbed all 1,776 steps of the CN Tower in support of the World Wildlife Fund, and partnered with the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority to restore what is now Westside Creek Marsh, a 25.7-hectare wetland where osprey nest and native fish species like largemouth bass have returned. Across the Votorantim Cimentos North America (VCNA) network, our businesses have contributed approximately $1.6 million (USD) over five years to causes centred on health and wellness, veterans and emergency services, and education. We also donated $250,000 (CAD) to Bowmanville Hospital to help improve patient care and support the hospital’s annual Racing for Health gala, helping fund the redevelopment, expansion, and equipment the hospital needs to keep serving the community.
These efforts reflect what happens when people who genuinely care about where they live also happen to work there. Our VC Way calls this Sustainable Legacy, and it is the thread that runs through every volunteer hour, every sponsored tournament, and every family that moves into a home our people helped build.
