Most cement plants talk about reducing fossil fuel dependence as a goal. At Charlevoix, it is a documented operational reality. With approximately 40 percent of kiln energy now sourced from alternative fuels through regulated co-processing, the plant has moved further along this transition than any other facility in the St Marys Cement network, and the work continues.
Approximately 40 percent of the energy used at the Charlevoix plant now comes from alternative sources rather than coal or petroleum coke. The plant reaches that level through co-processing, a regulated technology that recovers energy and mineral content from non-hazardous, non-recyclable byproducts, including plastics, paper, cardboard, textiles, non-tire rubber, and certain forms of biomass. Every input is documented and tested against recognized standards.
Results from this work are reported in publicly available Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for every cement product produced at this facility. Progress is also reported at community meetings and published through the plant’s environmental reporting process. Our VC Way calls this Lasting Results: progress that is measured, recorded, and available for verification by anyone who builds with our products.
