Our Commitment to Community and Responsible Production

Here, being a good neighbour is what being a responsible producer looks like. At St Marys Cement, being responsible and making a community impact are not separate programs running in parallel. They are expressions of the same values, the same people, and the same understanding that a plant’s presence in a community is a long-term relationship that has to be earned and maintained.

Across the regions we serve, our plants invest in the communities around them: through sponsorships, volunteer hours, conservation work, and structured forums that give neighbours a direct line to plant leadership. At the same time, every plant in the network is actively working to reduce the carbon intensity of its production, replacing traditional fossil fuels with energy recovered from non-recyclable industrial by-products, improving energy efficiency, and publishing verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) so that progress is publicly documented.

Bowmanville

In Clarington, the Bowmanville plant has been part of the community since 1969. We support youth hockey through the Josh Bailey Classic Tournament, partner with Habitat for Humanity to build homes in Northumberland County, and are actively working to reduce the carbon intensity of clinker production through its regulated Alternative Low Carbon Fuels program.

In the early 2000s, we partnered with the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority to restore what is now Westside Creek Marsh, a 25.7-hectare wetland that was once degraded land and is today one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in Ontario. Osprey have returned to nest there for the first time, native fish species like largemouth bass have re-established themselves, and more than 250 bird species now call the wetland home.

A Community Relations Committee provides a structured forum for residents, stakeholders, and plant leadership to communicate directly.

St Marys

Rooted in its namesake Ontario town since 1912, the St Marys plant has more than a century of community involvement behind it, from funding St. Marys Memorial Hospital to donating the land that now holds both the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and a public outdoor swimming pool converted from an old limestone quarry.

In 2024, the plant earned Natural Resources Canada’s ENERGY STAR for Industry certification, placing it in the top quartile for energy performance across Canada and the United States. Since May 2024, we have processed more than 29,000 tonnes of plastic and 1,700 tonnes of wood as Alternative Low Carbon Fuels, diverting those materials from landfill. Our Community Liaison Committee has met quarterly since 2017, with all minutes and presentations publicly available.

Charlevoix

On the shore of Lake Michigan in northern Michigan, the Charlevoix plant leads the St Marys Cement network in alternative fuels adoption, with approximately 40 percent of kiln energy now coming from alternative sources. Our team participates in conservation efforts including tree planting across plant sites, and the plant maintains active stewardship of its 1,370-acre property along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The Charlevoix plant holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 certifications, an integrated framework covering quality, environmental management, and occupational health and safety.

McInnis

On the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec, the McInnis plant is one of the largest private employers in the region, with more than 200 direct employees and work for up to 1,000 subcontractors. Our team contributes to healthcare organizations and programs for young people in the area, and maintains a dedicated engagement committee with First Nations representatives through the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Secretariat. The municipality of Port-Daniel-Gascons has reaffirmed its support for the plant’s continued operation and growth.

Badger

In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Badger plant invests in the next generation through youth programs, educational initiatives, and neighbourhood spaces that serve the communities closest to the plant. As a slag grinding facility, it also produces a supplementary cementitious material with a lower carbon profile than ordinary Portland cement, contributing to the network’s broader commitment to responsible production.
