Bowmanville Plant Community Relations
The Bowmanville plant has been part of Clarington since 1969, and in more than five decades, the relationship between the plant and the community around it has grown into something that goes well beyond employment. The people who run this operation live in these neighbourhoods, know their neighbours by name, and have spent years earning the kind of trust that does not come from a press release. It comes from consistency, presence, and a genuine investment in the place you call home.
Background
Cement and concrete shape daily life in ways most people never think about, and part of our role in Clarington is helping the community understand that connection. Beyond education, we work to maintain genuine, lasting relationships with residents, stakeholders, and regional organizations across the area, relationships built on direct communication and a willingness to be accountable to the people who live closest to our operations.
Our VC Way calls this Sustainable Legacy, and it is not a value we apply selectively. The same people who run shifts and manage production here are the ones coaching youth sports, volunteering on build days, and sitting across the table from neighbours who have questions about the plant. Over more than five decades in Clarington, that kind of consistent, personal presence has become the foundation of how this plant earns its place in the community.
History
The Bowmanville plant opened in 1969, and its relationship with Clarington has been growing ever since. The Bowmanville Community Relations Committee was formally established in December 1993, creating a structured channel for two-way communication between the plant and local residents, regional stakeholders, and community organizations. That committee, now more than 30 years old, remains active today, meeting regularly to address concerns, share updates, and keep the conversation between the plant and its neighbours moving forward.
Over the years, the plant has concentrated its community work on the areas Clarington cares about most: youth development, safe and affordable housing, and the kind of grassroots involvement that does not make headlines but builds real trust over time. It is the same steady, dependable commitment that has defined how St Marys Cement has operated in every community it has called home since 1912.
Contact and Committee Members
The Bowmanville Community Relations Committee meets regularly to work through local matters, respond to concerns, and share updates on plant operations. Residents and stakeholders are welcome to connect directly with the plant community contact, who can answer questions, direct inquiries to the right team members, and ensure your input reaches the committee.
Open Dialogue is a principle that guides how St Marys Cement operates in every community where it works. In Clarington, that means the door stays open.
Community Efforts
Youth hockey and safe housing matter to this community, and the Bowmanville team shows up for both. As a division sponsor of the Josh Bailey Classic Tournament, the plant helps young Clarington Toros players take to the ice each year, supporting a community hockey tradition that brings families together across the region. The tournament is named in honour of a Clarington-born National Hockey League player and carries genuine local significance.
At Bowmanville Ribfest, our team shows up as event greeters, hospitality support, and help with keeping the grounds in order and directing traffic for the crowds who attend.
St Marys Cement also supports the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation’s annual Racing for Health gala, which raises funds for the hospital’s redevelopment, expansion, and equipment needs. It is one more way our plant invests in the institutions a community depends on, not just the roads and buildings it helps construct.
These efforts reflect the Customer Focus and Sustainable Legacy values of Our VC Way: investing in the people and places that make up the community, not because it is required, but because it is the right way to operate.
Reports and Documents
The Bowmanville plant’s environmental reports, annual compliance reports, acoustic assessments, and related public documents are available for the community to access. These include annual Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) condition reports, emissions summary tables, and materials from Community Relations Committee meetings.
