Quality Cement Products for Canada
We have been producing cement in Canada since 1912, and the product range available today reflects everything learned across more than a century of being part of this industry. From a residential slab to a major highway interchange, every project demands a product that performs consistently. The full Canadian lineup is here: rigorously tested, clearly documented, and delivered through a logistics network built around the regions it serves.
Portland Cement
Portland cement is where St Marys Cement began, and it remains the foundation of our Canadian product range. Our lineup covers three performance profiles. Type GU is the general-purpose choice, appropriate for all applications where no special properties are required, and the product that ready-mix producers and contractors across Canada have relied on for decades. For projects where schedule demands faster results, High Early Type HEL is formulated specifically for accelerated strength gain, making it the specification of choice for cold-weather placements or any phase where stripping forms early is a priority.
Contempra, designated Type GUL under Canadian Standards Association (CSA) A3001, is St Marys Cement’s Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) for the Canadian market. In the US, St Marys sells the equivalent product under the ASTM C595 designation Type IL. Engineered to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately 10 percent compared to ordinary Portland cement, it produces concrete of comparable strength and durability across general construction applications. Once adopted across all suitable concrete applications nationally, Contempra is projected to reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 900,000 tonnes annually, the equivalent of removing 172,000 vehicles from the road or planting 23 million trees. Every product in this range conforms to CSA A3001 and is verified through systematic testing before leaving our facilities.
Masonry Cement
Masonry work does not forgive inconsistency. Mortar that spreads poorly, sets unpredictably, or fails to bond cleanly compromises every course above it. The St Marys Cement masonry range is formulated for workability and durability, performing reliably across mortar, stucco, and unit masonry applications. Available products include Type N Portland Lime, Type N Masonry Cement, and Type S Masonry Cement, each selected to meet the specific strength and workability requirements of the applications they are built for.
Blended Cement
For projects where a lower carbon profile is a specification requirement or a design priority, blended cements combine Portland cement with supplementary cementitious materials to reduce carbon intensity while meeting the performance demands of the application. The Canadian blended cement lineup includes Blended Silica Fume Type GUb-SF Cement and Type GULb-S Cement. Each product is verified through systematic testing and quality control against the relevant CSA codes and standards, and each carries the same standard of documentation that supports every other product in the St Marys Cement catalogue.
Slag Cement (Supplementary Cementitious Material)
St Marys CemPlus is produced by finely grinding granulated blast furnace slag, a glassy by-product of iron production with cementitious properties similar to Portland cement. Blended with Portland cement in various combinations, CemPlus produces concrete with measurable performance advantages over mixes containing 100 percent Portland cement alone: greater density, improved long-term durability, and resistance to alkali-silica reaction and sulphate attack. St Marys CemPlus conforms to CSA A3001 and Ontario Provincial Standard Specification (OPSS) 1350. St Marys Cement also produces a comparable slag cement in the US market under the designation Type IS, conforming to ASTM C595 rather than the Canadian standard.
Where project specifications permit its use, CemPlus reduces the clinker content in the final mix, which is where the majority of cement’s carbon intensity originates. In 2023, St Marys Cement received national recognition at the Slag Cement in Sustainable Concrete Awards for projects where CemPlus was specified across the network. CemPlus can also support achievement of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) points.
Our Distribution Network
A strong product catalogue matters only when supply chains are reliable. St Marys Cement’s distribution network was built around that reality. Plants and terminals reach across the regions we serve, connected by Great Lakes barge shipping, leased rail cars, and truck fleets covering last-mile delivery. More than 50 percent of cement moves by barge across the network, one of the most efficient freight modes available. Customer Focus, one of the nine principles of Our VC Way, means your schedule is treated with the same seriousness as your specification.
A Commitment to Quality
For more than 110 years, the standard for every product leaving a St Marys Cement facility has not changed. Quality is always verified, not assumed. Systematic testing against recognized Canadian and international standards happens at every plant before product ships. Our technical team works directly alongside ready-mix producers and engineers, bringing field knowledge accumulated across generations of employees to every mix design conversation. The product, the testing, and the service come as one offering, and they always have.
Trust and Simplicity, one of the nine principles of Our VC Way, means clear documentation, dependable performance, and a technical team that treats every specification with the same ownership the people at St Marys Cement have brought to this work since 1912.
A Lower Carbon Product Range for Canada
Reducing carbon intensity in cement production requires product development, testing, and documented results. Lower carbon options run through the St Marys Cement Canadian catalogue, built into product formulations rather than added as an afterthought. Contempra, Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) Type GUL, reduces carbon intensity compared to ordinary Portland cement by using a higher proportion of limestone in place of clinker. St Marys CemPlus slag cement extends that benefit further by diverting a by-product of iron production from disposal and reducing clinker content in the final mix. Blended Silica Fume cement addresses high-performance applications where strength, durability, and a reduced carbon footprint are all required simultaneously.
Each of these products carries plant-specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) prepared to recognized international standards, providing verified, third-party-assessed life-cycle data from raw material extraction through manufacturing. Our Act with Ownership principle that runs through Our VC Way means accountability to the customer and accountability to the environment come from the same place.
