The Detroit Cement Plant sits on the southwest side of the city, positioned with direct access to truck and rail networks to supply Southwest Michigan, Northeast Indiana, Ohio, and Ontario. From here, St Marys Cement supplies the full range of construction markets across one of the most actively developed corridors in the Great Lakes region, from residential builds to infrastructure projects and commercial landmarks that define the Detroit skyline.
The Dearborn Street plant began as a fully functional cement manufacturing facility with a long-wet kiln, operating since 1974. In 1984, St Marys Cement acquired the Peerless Cement Company in Detroit, establishing a direct US presence and strengthening the company’s reach on both sides of the Canada-US border.
By 1991, the plant converted to a grinding facility. Rather than producing clinker independently, it receives clinker shipped from the Bowmanville plant and grinds it into finished cement on site. That plant-to-plant relationship across the Great Lakes is a working example of the integrated network St Marys has built over more than a century.
The projects this plant has supplied speak for themselves: Comerica Park, Ford Field, Detroit Metro Airport, the NASA Plumbrook Research Facility, and numerous DOT paving and infrastructure and automotive manufacturing projects across the region. St Marys Cement Detroit remains committed to the City of Detroit and the ever-growing region.
The Detroit plant publishes plant-specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) covering Ordinary Portland Cement, High Early Cement, Portland Limestone Cement, Blended Cement, and Masonry Cement produced at this facility. These documents provide verified, third-party-assessed data on the environmental profile of our products from raw material inputs through manufacturing.
The plant holds ISO 9001 certification for quality management. Documentation is designed for direct use in project specifications, procurement decisions, and building certifications.
Genuine presence here in Detroit means sustained investment, consistent engagement, and showing up when it matters.
The Detroit Plant reflects that understanding. The team maintains active ties to the community around it, supporting local organizations and lending resources where they count. This includes supporting food banks, demonstrating a commitment that extends well beyond the plant’s immediate footprint.
This is Trust and Simplicity in practice: straightforward, honest investment in the community, carried out with the same dedication as the work inside the plant is done.
As a grinding facility, Detroit’s environmental profile differs from a full clinker-producing plant, and the responsibility to improve carries over just the same.
The Detroit plant is part of St Marys Cement’s transition away from coal and petroleum coke. Through regulated co-processing, a portion of traditional fossil fuels is replaced with energy recovered from non-recyclable industrial byproducts. These materials are processed under strict environmental controls and their energy content is captured in the kiln, reducing CO2 emissions at the source.
All St Marys Cement plants now produce Portland Limestone Cement, a product with lower clinker content and a reduced carbon profile. The Detroit plant’s ISO 9001 certification reflects the continuous improvement standard that Our VC Way calls Learn and Evolve. Meeting today’s performance baseline is only the starting point.
