When people hear you work at St Marys Cement, they light up. It is a place where people are genuinely proud to work, and in the towns where our plants operate, our reputation is well known.

When John Lind and Alfred Rogers broke ground on the St Marys Cement plant in 1912, they built something that was meant to last. More than a century later, the people who run this company are proof that they were right. Not just the structures that carry our cement, but the careers built on either side of the kiln.

At St Marys Cement, careers are not measured in months. They are measured in decades, in the mentors who shaped them, in the roles that grew with the person filling them, and in the families who have passed a love of this work from one generation to the next. Our VC Way, the shared culture connecting every person across our network, is what makes this kind of continuity possible.

Where Careers Take Root and Generations Follow

There are cement industry jobs that offer a paycheck and a start date. What we offer is a place where careers develop over years, where people move between roles, master new equipment, step into leadership, and look back twenty or thirty years later and understand exactly why they stayed.

It is not unusual here to find four generations of the same family working across the same operation. Great-grandparents who quarried limestone, grandparents who operated heavy equipment, parents who came up through apprenticeships, and children who stepped into their own roles and found the same close-knit culture waiting for them. Our team members describe working at St Marys Cement as feeling like a warm, familiar place you want to return to every day. The company has supported its people not just professionally but personally, through milestones and challenges alike, because that is what it means to work somewhere that treats its people as more than a headcount.

Women have stepped into operations, engineering, and leadership roles across our network that would have been rare in this industry a generation ago, supported by training, respect, and a workplace culture shaped by the Our VC Way value of Ethics and Diversity. One engineer at our Charlevoix plant, whose grandfather once operated heavy equipment at the same facility, puts it plainly: the plant supports families, and it keeps people here. Her son works there too. The generational thread continues.

Mentors are a real part of how careers develop at St Marys Cement. Well-seasoned professionals who have spent decades in the field carry institutional knowledge that no training manual captures, and they pass it on. Relationships between someone who knows the work deeply and someone who is learning it are part of what makes a first shift here the beginning of something much longer. Trust and Simplicity, one of the nine principles of Our VC Way, is built into how we work with one another from day one.

Growth here is intentional, not incidental. The Cement Technical Institute, part of the VCNA Academy, gives employees a dedicated space to build skills and advance their careers, anchored in the same values that shape how work gets done every day. Sessions cover everything from production excellence to leadership, reflecting the Learn and Evolve principle of Our VC Way: a company that keeps improving keeps investing in the people doing the work.

Safety and Health is the first principle of Our VC Way, and it is stated without qualification: people’s Safety and Health come first, before results.

Our Global Health and Safety Policy commits us to identifying, eliminating, and addressing health and safety risks across all work and processes, for employees and contractors alike. Critical Risk Protocols and Life-saving Rules apply to every site, and compliance is non-negotiable. Occupational health and safety training is provided as part of every employee’s professional development, building a skill set that grows with a career rather than stopping after onboarding.

Beyond safety, we invest in the long-term health and well-being of our people through a total rewards package built to support you and your family at every stage of life and career. Biometric screenings, flu vaccination clinics, wellness assessments, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) support for mental health, and on-site wellness resources are available across our Canadian and US locations. And we have fun putting Safety and Health at the forefront of our operations! Our teams run and participate in health challenges that get everyone involved, like when a 30-day team movement challenge across the network drew 472 participants who collectively logged more than 147 million steps. These are not just perks added to a job description, but they are the expression of a company that understands its people are its most important long-term investment.

Since 1912, the communities surrounding our plants have been far more than a backdrop to our work. They are where our people live, raise families, and spend their time outside of the plant. When you join St Marys Cement, you join those communities too.

Our teams coach local hockey and sponsor youth tournaments that bring families together across the region. We build homes with Habitat for Humanity, stock shelves at local food banks, and join volunteer events to address pressing community needs alongside hundreds of regional volunteers. Our teams have climbed all 1,776 steps of the CN Tower in support of the World Wildlife Fund. Across the Votorantim Cimentos North America (VCNA) network, our businesses have contributed approximately $1.6 million USD over five years to causes centred on health and wellness, veterans and emergency services, and education.

The Sustainable Legacy principle at the heart of Our VC Way asks each of us to contribute to the development of the people and communities where we operate. At St Marys Cement, that has never been a corporate initiative. It is simply what people who care about where they live choose to do when they also happen to work there.
